Towards Abstraction

  • Coburg House Art Studios 15 Coburg Street Edinburgh, Scotland, EH6 6ET United Kingdom (map)

Representation is only one way of seeing. Towards Abstraction brings together five established artists whose practices demonstrate the breadth and vitality of contemporary painting beyond representation. Rather than sharing a single visual language, CP Campbell, Josie McConnell, Joy Arden, Maria Vigers and Nicky Sanderson each approach image-making as a way of understanding the world, transforming observation, memory, material and emotion into works that resist easy resolution.

Across painting, print-making and mixed media, the exhibition explores the shifting boundary between representation and abstraction. Fragments of landscape dissolve into gesture, colour becomes structure, surface records time, and familiar forms hover on the edge of recognition. Each artist invites us to slow down, allowing meaning to emerge through rhythm, texture, composition and mark-making rather than narrative alone.

Together, these works reveal abstraction not as an escape from reality, but as another way of engaging with it; one that embraces ambiguity, intuition and the physical act of making. Towards Abstraction celebrates the confidence of artists whose practices continue to evolve, demonstrating that non-representational practice remains a dynamic and expansive field: a place where perception is challenged, possibilities remain open, and every encounter offers the potential to see differently.
