Common Threads

  • Coburg House Art Studios 15 Coburg Street Edinburgh, Scotland, EH6 6ET United Kingdom (map)

Common Threads presents the work of six leading textile artists from Coburg House Studios whose practices are redefining what contemporary textiles can be.

Featuring Dominique Saag, Eleni Kalorkoti, James Donald, Kathleen Moodie, Madeleine Shepherd and Mairi Brown, this exhibition celebrates artists who work at the intersection of traditional craft and contemporary art. Drawing on techniques including weaving, stitching, embroidery, construction, embellishment and textile manipulation, these makers transform fibre, cloth and thread into works that are innovative, ambitious and deeply personal.

Far removed from conventional perceptions of textile practice, the works on display challenge expectations of scale, material and process. Through experimentation and exceptional technical skill, the artists push the boundaries of handmade craft, demonstrating the continuing relevance of textiles as a powerful contemporary art form. Rich in texture, colour and material intelligence, the exhibition reveals textiles as a medium capable of expressing complex ideas while maintaining a tangible connection to the hand of the maker.

Created within the creative community of Coburg House, these works reflect the depth of talent housed within the studios and the enduring value of making in an increasingly digital world. Together they showcase a field that is dynamic, evolving and full of possibility.

Join us for an exhibition that celebrates the artistry, innovation and future of contemporary textiles, where tradition is honoured, boundaries are challenged, and thread becomes something extraordinary.
