Four Stories

  • Coburg House Art Studios 15 Coburg Street Edinburgh, Scotland, EH6 6ET United Kingdom (map)

Four Stories in paint and print, by four artists.

Nicky Beckett is a mixed media artist living in Edinburgh and based at Summerhall. The story she presents is one of those people at the edge of society. She uses photography, painting and a variety of media including collage to create layers to tell the story of each individual displayed. The use of text is an integral part of these works. Fragments of conversation and thoughts are included as each piece is developed in collaboration with the subject. Some of the words are difficult to decipher - this is intentional as the aim is to encourage reflection and thought.

Jacqui Higgs SSA has recently moved from Edinburgh to the Highlands near Findhorn. The story she presents is a continuation of her process of making drawings outside to feed into her studio practice She has recently been exploring coastal harbours and sea life on the Moray coast and in Caithness, where she has also been intrigued by the activities of the surfing community.

Nicky Sanderson is an artist printmaker based at Coburg House Studios, Edinburgh. The story she presents examines the marine environment and its importance in the fight against climate change. She works mainly with screen print, collage and paint and her Sea Kelp hangings on tissue paper are intended to raise awareness of how conservation of this fragile ecosystem around our shores can purify the ocean environment and lead to rewilding of our coastal areas.

Nicky will be showing other related prints, paintings and collages.

Mary Walters SSA is a mixed media artist with a studio at St Margaret’s House. The story she presents is one of travel – both recent to the Arctic regions of Svalbard and not-so-recent to the tropical island of Dominica in the Eastern Caribbean. In Svalbard, she drew inspiration from icy landscapes under constant threat from Climate Change, and the nuances of blue light that add wonder to those landscapes. She has recently returned to some older sketchbooks to explore the striking colours of the rainforest plants she drew at Papillote Wilderness Retreat in Dominica. She has collaborated with Nicky Sanderson to add cyanotype printed hangings to the installation about marine environments
