Colours of the Beach

  • Coburg House Art Studios 15 Coburg Street Edinburgh, Scotland, EH6 6ET United Kingdom (map)

Rebekah McVitie was a Makeup Artist for 25 year but during the pandemic, like so many others, was unable to work. Out of this came time and space to create art again. When things started to open up Rebekah decided not to return to her former career but to carry on investigating the art practice that had started during lockdown.

Colours of the Beach is a project about collecting, reuse and the past, how something that has been discarded can be made into something new, something beautiful that will be cherished for years to come.

A collection of necklaces has been made from glass collected from beaches along the Firth of Forth. These fragments are full of history and many will be 100 years old or more. They can tell us a story of what they once were and the place where they were found. The new necklace will hold the history and stories of those fragments and then once worn will take on new memories and meaning.

''Each necklace is made from sea glass I collect from beaches along the Firth of Forth. The fragments of glass are then turned into beads using the lamp working method where a gas torch is used to melt the glass. Once in a molten state the glass is wound round a metal rod know as a mandrel to form the bead. These are then cooled slowly to make the final bead. Each bead is unique which gives the necklaces their individual character.''

If like Rebekah you enjoy the beach and would like a memory of your favourite one then you can collect your own glass, send it to Rebekah and get her to make you a necklace. For more information you can contact her at rmcvitie@gmail.com.
